La Menara Landscape Design: Shaping Unique Green Spaces Since 1999

La Menara Landscape Design, is a Marbella-based family business whose founder, Oscar Vázquez, first began his landscaping career in 1985. Now in its second generation, La Menara has been bringing outdoor spaces to life since 1999. The company blends sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics in a harmonious way that truly sets them apart in both public and private landscape design.

Whether it’s a small private garden or a large public park, La Menara is all about creating outdoor environments that not only look stunning but also complement the architecture around them. With projects spanning Spain, Portugal, Italy, and even the Arabian Peninsula, their reputation for delivering innovative and tailored designs has gone international. From green spaces that breathe new life into urban areas to tranquil private retreats, La Menara’s touch is all about the use of nature to enhance everyday life.
Below, Pablo Vázquez Davey, the head of La Menara, shares insights into the company’s journey, its design philosophy, and the growing importance of sustainability in the luxury real estate market.
Tell us about the early days of La Menara.
Pablo: La Menara started as a family business in 1999, following my father's passion for landscape architecture. We were based in Benahavís initially and moved to San Pedro Alcántara in 2019. We’ve grown into a team of 15, including landscape architects, an agricultural engineer, administrative staff, and a skilled team of gardeners. From the beginning, we’ve been dedicated to designing unique, functional, and eco-friendly spaces for both private villas and large corporate projects.

Did you always know you wanted to follow in your father’s footsteps?
Pablo: Absolutely! I’ve always been fascinated by my father’s work, and it’s something we’ve shared for years. I pursued Landscape Architecture at the University of Évora in Portugal, where I developed a deeper appreciation for aesthetics and land planning, particularly inspired by Portugal's approach to design.
What are some projects you’re particularly proud of?
Pablo: We’ve been fortunate to work on a variety of projects, from private villas like Finca Avola to large-scale developments such as Marina El Rompido. One of my personal favourites is the design for Parque del Pinar, although it wasn’t executed in the end. Each project, no matter the size, has its own identity and challenges, which makes our work exciting.
What makes La Menara's designs stand out?
Pablo: Our use of organic lines, the integration of Mediterranean plants, and a focus on sustainability set us apart. We don’t just design beautiful gardens—we ensure they’re functional, sustainable, and blend seamlessly with the existing architecture. Every project is designed with the long-term in mind, so when you revisit one of our gardens years later, it has matured into something even more beautiful.

How has the landscape industry evolved over the years?
Pablo: COVID-19 in 2020 really changed how people view their outdoor spaces. We’ve seen an increase in demand for creating comfortable, versatile outdoor areas where homeowners can relax and enjoy their own surroundings, creating nooks that offer privacy or a sense of intimacy. This has influenced our recent work, especially in luxury real estate, where outdoor living spaces have become just as important as the interior design.
How do you incorporate sustainability in your designs?
Pablo: Sustainability has always been a core part of our philosophy. We prioritise using native plants that require less water and maintenance, which makes the gardens more durable over time. We also encourage water-saving systems, especially for larger properties, and aim to create green spaces that are not only beautiful but also eco-friendly.
How has technology impacted your design process?
Pablo: When my father started the business, everything was hand-drawn. Now, we use advanced tools like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Photoshop, which allow our clients to visualise the designs before they’re executed. It’s a much more interactive and clear process for everyone involved, and it enhances the overall experience.

What’s next for La Menara, and how do you see the future of landscape design in luxury real estate?
Pablo: I think landscape architecture has become essential in luxury real estate. People now understand the value of a well-designed outdoor space, whether it’s for personal enjoyment or to increase the value of a property. Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue blending sustainability with innovative design to create timeless landscapes that reflect our clients’ visions.
If you had to summarise your approach to landscape design in one sentence, what would it be?
Pablo: We create spaces that harmonise functionality, sustainability, and aesthetics, ensuring that our designs are as practical as they are beautiful.
La Menara Landscape Design remains dedicated to bringing their vision—and their clients' visions—to life through tailored, sustainable designs. Their ability to listen and collaborate ensures that every project, whether for private homes or larger developments, perfectly reflects each project’s unique goals and desires. With a focus on thoughtful, personalised landscapes, La Menara consistently delivers spaces that leaves a lasting impression and are certain to stand the test of time.
